When you buy a brand new computer you expect it to be relatively fast no matter what program you are running. This is especially true when you are buying a desktop computer, since they are usually much faster. Some computers gradually become slower over long periods of time due to normal computer use. Sometimes it can also be attributed to wear and tear, but when your computer freezes suddenly, becoming sluggish, you know that you have an abnormal problem.
It is especially a pain when the computer freezes to the point where you cannot use the computer at all. Also it becomes very hard to do any computer troubleshooting because you cannot use the computer. Unless you are a computer professional you would have no idea where to start. This is a good situation where knowing some basic skills can help you determine what the problem is.
If your computer freezes suddenly while you are doing something then you may not have enough physical memory to run the current program efficiently. Physical memory is also known as RAM. This cannot be solved by increasing the amount of virtual memory because virtual memory is the reason why the computer is sluggish is the first place. Virtual memory is too slow to run programs efficiently. When you do not have enough RAM for certain types of programs they can time out. When they time out they can either close abruptly or cause your computer to become unstable and freeze. The best thing to do in this situation is to invest some money in some RAM upgrades. If you do not want to spend any money then you can try closing all of the programs and processes that are not important to maximize the amount of RAM that the program can use. This is not the best way but sometimes it is the only way as far as money goes.
Another reason why a computer freezes all of a sudden is bad RAM. There will be a part of the RAM that will not save some vital information. Even it is a little bit of data it can cause the computer to crash or display the hourglass indefinitely. Just like the last problem, resorting to RAM upgrades will be you best choice. It is also possible that both of these problems may be plaguing your computer simultaneously. Getting RAM upgrades would be like knocking out two birds with one stone.
